Theatre Design & Ventilation

THEATRE DESIGN

Four Zones:

  1. Outer zone - rest of hospital & theatre reception

  2. Clean zone - theatre complex up to the theatre doors

  3. Aseptic zone

  4. Disposal zone

Temperature & Humidity:

  • risk of hypothermia to patients from paralysis, cool IV fluids & large exposed wounds

  • To prevent hypothermia temp of 24-26oC required, but ideal working temp = 19-20oC - therefore use warming blankets or air flow mattresses

  • Temp affects the polymerisation of PMMA cement

  • Humidity should be 40-60%

  • Temp & Humidity are best controlled by adjusting the ventilation.

Illumination

  • light source for surgery should produce > 40 000 luxs at the incision site

  • May alter air flow patterns
