Analgesia and Orthopaedics

Definition of pain – The International Association for the Study of Pain define pain as
“An unpleasant and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage” (IASP 1979)

Analgesic Ladder (see diagram) – The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends a stepwise approach to providing analgesia, based on the severity of the pain reported by the patient. If the patient does not have relief despite administration of the full dose at regular interval, reassess source of pain and then progress to step 2
