Anterior Approach

Traditional anterior.
 
Landmarks:

• Medial Malleolus
• Lateral Malleolus
 
 
Incision:

• Start 10cm proximal to joint
• Extend to 5cm distal crossing the ankle joint approximately midway between the malleoli
• Caution: Cut only skin as the anterior neurovascular bundle and branches of the superficial peroneal nerve cross the ankle joint very close to the skin incision.
 
Internervous Plane:

• Not an internervous plane
