Phalanx Fractures (distal)

Fractures may occur at a number of points: terminal tuft, neck or base.

Mechanism of Injury

These fractures usually arise from a crushing injury: trapping of the finger in a door or being struck by a hammer.

Clinical Features

Localised pain and swelling occurs with the possible development of a subungual haematoma.

X-rays confirm the diagnosis.

Associated Injuries  

Associated b one infection may occur if the fracture site is open. Soft tissue injury also occurs and loss of loss of pulp skin may occur.
