These can be intra or extra-articular.

Classification

Fractures can be classified into being intra-articular or extra-articular:

  • Type 1 - intra-articular fracture (Bennett's fracture-dislocation)
  • Type 2 - intra-articular fracture (Rolando fracture - T or Y fracture)
  • Type 3A -  extra-articular
  • Type 3B - extra-articular
  • Type 4 - extra-articular.

Mechanism of Injury / History

Fractures usually arise as a result of a fall or sporting injury in which the thumb is suddenly extended.
